About the HCI Writing Club

The Iowa State HCI Writing Club, is a student run group that meets weekly to discuss presentations, papers, and articles. The group provides students in the HCI program with an opportunity to collaborate and receive feedback in a safe environment. Each member is encouraged to present at least once a semester and regularly attend meetings to provide feedback to other students.

What is it like?

Joining a meeting involves attending in-person or via WebX to watch/present a presentation or writing sample. During the presentation students offer feedback for improvement based on their own experiences learned in and outside of class.

The following are some examples of what students have presented in the past:

  • A section of thesis, conference proceeding, or journal article
  • A prelim or final defense practice talk

Feedback is not always about content, grammar, and structure; many students in the group enjoy getting to know other HCI students and sharing academic experiences. Students also enjoy discussing public speaking skills, PowerPoint slide design layouts, or how to submit a paper to a peer review journal.
